Do You Even Lift?

Why are the majority of our ulema, brothers, shuyookh, sisters overweight? Too many somosa chaat's I think. I don't blame them, they're bloody nice.

The messenger of Allah (saw) fought all the battles over 40 years old. He participated in at least 17 major battles. Carrying thick, heavy armour in scorching heat of around 40 degrees, up and down mountains, fighting with the sahabah's.

Imagine at the battle of badr; Rasoolallah (saw), Hamza ibn abd al-mutallib, Ali ibn abi talib, Umar ibn al-khattab on the front line as the commanders of their divisions. Can you imagine a side shot of them lining up. I for one certainly don't see them with bellies spilling over.

If we don't look after the amaanah that Allah has entrusted us with, we will become lazy and fall sooner than we should. We will breed a generation of inactive, couch lovin' children.

Strength, discipline goes hand in hand with imaan and taqwa. These are the qualities of all our prophets.

The majority of sisters I've pursued don't look after themselves physically. Why?! The majority of cities have female only gyms. Many use it as an excuse that they don't have one near them. You can exercise at home and simply watch what you eat. Some are gifted with attractive and slender bodies but that's not an excuse not to make an active effort in keeping fit. It's not just about the appearance.

Please don't comment with it's in your heart bakwaas. This needs to stop. And it starts with us.

Training builds discipline and discipline is what we should all strive for.

What do you do to keep fit? Are you in the process of making any changes or have you made any changes?

  2. Saying what I said before, I do regret saying it- which I know is hypocritical of me.

-We are not the ones to judge people- what weight they are, their looks, their personality, good or bad- only Allah is the one to judge them at the end of the day. And viewing ourselves better than others or thinking we have the right to look down on them is a sign or arrogance which Islam forbids and God help me if I fall into that trap.

My thoughts were primarily concerned around obese/seriously overweight people but even then I feel guilt in placing any blame on them because I don't know how they've come to that situation or even what they've experienced. Never would I say a harsh word to anyone is overweight and I have no problem especially with sisters who have a wee bit of fat.

I know sisters that are perfectly healthy, close of friends of mine that have had rishtas turned down because of that issue when in reality they go to the gym and eat a perfectly healthy diet.

And if I were ever introduced to a brother who was pious and practising but a tad overweight, honestly, I probably would marry him. And inshallah I hope I do find a brother just like and not one who views looks and weight as a priority over personality and piety.

    1. Wooooosh..

You just had to state the obvious and kill it one time.

Take the subject for what it is. People don't look after themselves, simples.

    2. No Muslimah Monologues is right to an extent. you cant judge a person on their weight and say that because they have some weight that they arent healthy, especially if you don't know a thing about them. There are many cases were people have weird do to heath problems, problems they are born with. They may eat healthy and excercise but still cant do anything about their weight because this problem or that problem. Some people just arent meant to be at a certain wait. The truly beautiful are the ones who accept themselves and don't judge other people or hate others because they can't look like them. Beauty is in the heart, its in a persons charater and deen, and a person can be a very religious person with good character and still have alittle weight, because weight doesnt make a person, the soul makes the person. Our bodies are just where the soul lives, but yes though we need to take care of the body, its not always as simple as you seemed to make it out to be in your post. Just like she said," I feel guilt in placing any blame on them because I don't know how they've come to that situation or even what they've experienced." Try to put yourself in their shoes, and know that as much as you would like to understand, you may never truly understand. No everyone is the same, everyone deals with things differently.

    3. Nobody is judging here. Nor is there anything to suggest otherwise.

The majority of people don't have health issues, they just pile on the pounds and up cortisol production which induces numerous health issues. That's self-inflicted.

It's not a complicated issues and it has nothing to do with being judgemental.

  7. I can lift two donuts.

eating healthy+ exercising= feeling good mentally. Learned that after first year of uni when I didn't join sport teams. I just felt tired all of sudden and lazy. Now as soon as a wake up I exercise.

  9. I'm sorry Soulseek- but things aren't as simple as you make them out to be, as soon as we start making assumptions about people when we don't even know the real situation the sooner we start 'judging' people based our own prejudices.

I don't agree with people who don't look after themselves and eat themselves unhealthy but I may have flaws that they could criticise-

''Look at the dirt in your eyes before critising the dust in your brother's''

  10. Why must raising a concern equal to judging and criticising someone? They're *completely* different things.

Lets not miss the point here.

    1. Such a wonderful reminder by such an amazing man. Jazakallah Khair. I'll be editing my post to add this.

With the attitude of our Ummah today, it's easy to look for excuses. Umar (ra) was legend. Never will there be another Umar, sad times :(

  12. I have a concern. Your post made me think. What do you do when practising brothers drool and watch videos of women working out? Someone I know who was pursuing me did this and he told me about it too. It's a serious topic. I get your post and I work out anyway but I had to ask this question as it is a serious one that us girls need help with dealing with. Nice blog.

    1. They're not practising brothers if they're announcing their sins. That is haraam and that is a disease.

There are a ton of workout videos made by men. There is no excuse. That's just shameless.

  14. Salaam.

    Interesting post.
I watch what I eat and look after myself, and would definitely be looking for a partner who is the same. Both men and women who are overweight aren't particularly attractive, regardless of the cause of it.
My thought is when I see a potential suitor, that if he looks like this now, how will he look in ten years. I'm hardly a spring chicken, but I look a lot younger than my age (youngest guesstimate I've had of my age is 23 and I'm 37)
Appearance matters, and somebody who cares for the way they look is important. After all, aren't our bodies an amanah to us?

  15. I suppose most people lack the motivation or just hope they'll start before they get married. I never really needed to lose weight, alhumdulillah, but I definitely felt unfit for a while before I felt motivated enough to start exercising regularly. It definitely helps to have someone to go to the gym with you. It's more fun that way. Or find a gym that you'll enjoy going to. Once you start, you'll find yourself not being able to do without heading there.
